Discipline Management in Muslim Institutions

1. Every school must have clearly spelt out rules and regulations governing both the students and the staff which must be adhered to by everybody. These rules and regulations must be legal and compliant with Islamic principles of fairness and justice.
2. The school must have a discipline management committee constituted according to the guidelines in the school minimum standards booklet, which proactively works to build and maintain a culture of discipline in the schools.

3. The school must have a staff management committee that deals with cases of teacher indiscipline and resolving staff confl icts. The committee may refer diffi cult cases to the BOG/SMC.

4. School heads must avoid working unilaterally in dealing with cases of indiscipline as this may cause discontent among students and staff which may result in unrest.

5. The BOG/SMC must have an active discipline management committee that deals with cases referred by the discipline and staff management committees of the school and cases of insiscipline by the top administrators. The committee may refer cases to UMEA for intervention where cases cannot be solved at school level.

6. The Academic, Monitoring and Discipline committee of UMEA shall handle cases referred by the Board Of Governors or School Management Committee or where intervention is deemed necessary based on information from legitimate sources other than the school community.

7. Cases of criminal nature according to the laws of the country should where deemed necessary be expeditiously handed over to police or the available law enforcement agency in the area.
